Archive for February, 2011

If you know me, you know I have an unnatural obsession with fairy tales.  Not the Disney remakes, although I do have my own collection of Princess costumes, but the real down and dirty fairy tales.  The fairy tales that don’t end with a happy ending.  Have you ever read the original Little Mermaid?  The ending is not pretty.  Lately I have become even more interested in fairy tales and folklore and the history behind them.

On top of all of that I have found a love for fractured fairy tales and the retelling of the tales from a different viewpoint.  Gregory Maguire is wonderful at this, to the point of having one of his novels turned into a Broadway musical.  His middle grade work is also worth checking out.  Gale Carson Levine is also a favorite.  Recently I was introduced The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede which had me questioning how on earth I managed to grow up without discovering these books.  So imagine my surprise finding Enchanted Conversation: A Fairy Tale Magazine.

I have been having a field day reading through the archives.  I love reading what others take from the fairy tales I grew up with.  The Beauty and the Beast edition is a current favorite, though I am biased as the original has always been a favorite of mine.  If you are stuck on what to work on next, check out their submissions page for a writing prompt.

I hope y’all enjoy this as much as I have been.
